Mentoring Night - PDPs!

The Movement Science Department is kicking off the Advising period with a Mentoring Night on Monday, October 25, from 7-8pm in the Woodward Student Lounge. Any upperclass students in good standing are eligible to be mentors. And any first year or transfer students are highly encouraged to be a mentee for the evening. Students can expect to learn about creating schedules, online audits and registration, remaining advising questions, Intermediate Standing & much more!

A reminder that IS/AS portfolios are due to your advisor by Monday, October 25. Also, be sure to sign up for an advising session with your advisor. Lists will be posted on the bulletin board in Woodward for your convenience. All first year students are required to go to Peer Advising in the Academic Achievement Office. If you have questions, contact your advisor or the Movement Science Department Office right away.

Irish Sports Science & Culture

Have you considered studying abroad? Here is a chance for Movement Science majors to study with our own Dr. Bill Miller in Ireland. Dr. Miller is offering MOVP 0396, a course titled, Irish Sports Science & Culture. It will be a short term course held in May, 2011. The cost is $3,000 for the 3 credit course. The fee is an estimate which includes tuition, round trip airfare, accomodations, most excursions, some meals and more. This could be an opportunity of a lifetime! MAHPERD Student Summit

Mandator Majors Meeting

There will be a MANDATORY Majors Meeting on Monday, September 13 @ 6:30pm (1st years and transfers) and 7:15pm for upperclassmen/women in Scanlon Banquet Hall. All MSSLS Majors are expected to attend. A wide range of topics will be discussed including the revised MSSLS Manual, upcoming conferences and other events. PDP Opportunity - Career Event in Davis Hall

Movement Science major, Charlie Bain is an RA in Davis Hall. He is organizing a Major Fair for undeclared first year students. He is looking for each department to send a senior student representative to promote their major if possible. He notes, "Since Davis Hall is comprised of first year students, there are a considerable amount of students at this time, are still unsure of what they want to do. Hopefully this event will help them decide or at least peak their interest in a new field of study."

The event will be held April 27th at 6pm in the Davis Common Room.

Interested students should contact Charlie directly at cbain8509@wsc.ma.edu. PDPs will be awarded for participation in this event. Be sure to have a yellow and/or tan form signed.

Spring Symposium

Mark your calendars for the Spring Symposium on Thursday, May 6th. The event will be held in the Woodward Center from 6:30-9:00pm. Movement Science students are required to attend. Students will earn a PDP for their attendance.

The evening will be filled with special events including presentations and awards. Seniors will be giving presentations on their internships, student teaching and other clinical experiences. Other students will also have the opportunity to present practical work or research in the form of poster presentations. There will also be an award ceremony to honor the seniors and others earning high GPAs. Lastly, the evening will conclude with a "movie" experience.

Please join us to celebrate the Movement Science students on May 6th!

PDP Opportunity - Coach Soccer!

Volunteers are welcome to help teach a preschoolers soccer class. The class will be held on Wednesdays, from 4/28 - 5/19, at 6:00-6:45pm at the Greenwood Community Center in Longmeadow. PDP Opportunity - South M.S. Leadership Day

Students from South Middle School in Westfield will be participating in a Leadership Day at Westfield State College on April 30, from 8:30am-2pm. Student volunteers are welcomed. Movement Science students will be running programs at the Ropes Course, as well as, in the Field House. Volunteers can assist with activities such as circuit training or group exercise sessions. Phone-A-Thon

There will be a Prospective Student Phone-A-Thon on Thursday April 1st. The phone bank will be set up in the Garden rooms A and B of Horace Mann from 6:30 to 8:00pm. We will order pizza and beverages for all those participating in the event. Scripts will be created for students to use for the initial contact. Faculty will be on hand to answer questions and get on the phone as an added bonus. Interested students who would like to help should please sign-up with Susan in the department office by Monday, March 29th. A PDP will be awarded!

Munger Hill Field Day

Students are encouraged to volunteer at the Munger Hill Field Day. The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board near the Aerobics Studio. Students may sign up for set up (7am), the morning session (9:15-11:45am) or the afternoon session (12:15-2:45pm) which includes take down of equipment. Intermediate & Advanced Standing

Students applying for Intermediate Standing should have a draft of their IS folders for their advisors by Monday,March 1. Completed IS folders are due to SPEC by Friday, March 26.

MAHPERD Spring Conference

Westfield State College will be hosting the 2010 MAHPERD Spring Conference on Friday, March 5, 2010, 9am-3pm in the Woodward Center. Details, including registration information can be found at:

Students can attend for free by volunteering to assist at the Conference. They can sign up to preside (they can see Dr. Stanne to sign-up) or help with the set-up, sign-in or clean-up. For helping out students will receive 1 clinical PDP. In addition they will receive 1 professional PDP for attending a minimum of 2 sessions and 2 professional PDP’s for attending 3 or more sessions (the preliminary schedule is on Dr. Rausch's bulletin board).

MOST IMPORTANT is that students must sign-up for the conference by Wednesday, March 17th. There is NO registration on the day of the conference. Sign-up sheets can be found on my bulletin board.

Wii Fit Fest

Dr. Fitts and the Health Fitness students will be hosting a Wii Fit Fest on March 8, 6:30-7:30pm in the Scanlon Banquet Hall. Following the expo will be a talk by Dr. Dan Drury: Fitness Technology: A fad or the future in Scanlon Living Room from 7:30-8:30pm. A Mentoring Meeting will be held Wednesday, November 18, 7-8pm in the Woodward Student Lounge. All First Year and Transfer students are highly encouraged to attend (earn 1 Academic PDP). Any upperclassmen/women are welcome to volunteer to be mentors. Mentors should be able to assist mentees on various Movement Science topics such as advising, registration, PDP's, IS/AS, etc. If you have some valuable Movement Science experiences to share - please sign up to help our newest majors! PDP's will be awarded for both mentors and mentees.

Careers Night

The Annual MSSLS Careers Night will be held on Thursday, October 22, 6-7:30pm in the Scanlon Banquet Hall. The program is required for first year and transfer MSSLS majors and highly encouraged for all others. A PDP will be awarded for attendance. Come meet numerous professionals in the field including: health and physical educators, athletic trainers, personal trainers, physician's assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, coaches, administrators and more!
